As a nurse, you’ve dedicated your career to helping others. It’s the reason many of you chose this career path. But after too many long night shifts and an undeservingly low salary at your NHS job, you might be left with doubts over whether you chose the right career.
Luckily, there is another option that lets you put your hard-earned medical skills to use in a more rewarding and flexible work environment.
Allow us to introduce you to the prospering world of aesthetic medicine – an industry where you can use your nursing expertise in combination with the science of aesthetic beauty. This is an industry that offers career growth opportunities, better work-life balance, and a boosted income an NHS nursing position alone could never give you.
One of the first aesthetic treatments aspiring nurse injectors pursue is botulinum toxin, or more commonly called Botox.
At the Aesthetic Training HUB, we understand the unique position nurses are in when considering a move to aesthetics. We’ve seen it countless times in past delegates. Making this career change is a daunting endeavour, but we’re here to help make it easier. Read on for everything you need to know about choosing the right Botox course.
Why Pursue A Career in Aesthetic Medicine?
Before we dive into how to choose the right Botox training course, we first need to explore why so many nurses like yourself are turning away from traditional NHS roles and towards aesthetic medicine.
Higher Income
Inflation and cost of living continues to rise at staggering rates, but most salaries stay the same. This can be both frustrating and concerning. How are you supposed to pay your bills when you’re trapped in a career that doesn’t pay you your worth?
As a nurse injector, this isn’t a problem. Aesthetic treatments like Botox significantly boost your earning potential. This makes a noticeable difference in your yearly income and can potentially double or even triple your earnings.
Improved Work-Life Balance
Gone are the days of working long night shifts. With an aesthetic medicine career, you’ll have more control over your working hours. While many of our delegates choose to go part-time with their nursing career, many make the jump to a full-time aesthetics career, allowing them 100% control over when and how much they work.
Career Autonomy
Whether you’d like to start your own business or work in a pre-existing clinic, aesthetic medicine offers you unmatched control over not only your life but also career. You get to decide exactly what your aesthetics career will look like, without any unneeded insight from an overbearing boss. Your career is built by you for you.
Exciting Industry
Another massive benefit of a career in aesthetics is the chance to be a part of an exciting, ever-changing industry. Aesthetic technologies are constantly evolving. This means you’ll have endless opportunities to continue expanding your skills and knowledge even after your first course.
Rewarding Patient Interactions
No one is at the hospital or their GP because they want to be there. These patients are there because they are sick or injured, neither of which are ever positive experiences. They want to get in and out as fast as possible. There is little to no time or opportunity for building relationships.
This is not the case with the aesthetics industry. Aesthetics patients are there because they want to be. Before their treatment, they’re excited and looking forward to transforming their appearance. Afterwards, they’ll be overjoyed and grateful to you for being the one to give them their confidence and happiness back. These patient interactions are more rewarding and impactful than the ones you’ll have in your NHS practice.
Unique Blend of Science & Art
You don’t throw away all of the medical knowledge you learned during your nursing experience. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. This career lets you apply all of the skills you learned as a nurse to your injections to create breathtaking results your patients will love. Here at the HUB, we believe those with medical qualifications make the best injectors. They already have a strong grasp on medical injection techniques and the importance of patient safety, making the learning curve less steep.
How to Become a Botox Nurse in the UK
If you’ve read those benefits and decided, yes, this is the career change I’ve been looking for, it’s time to delve into the steps it takes to actually become an aesthetic injector. While the prospect of a career change may be daunting, we have good news. This process is easier than most think.
Here are the 7 main steps to becoming an aesthetic nurse:
1. Maintain Your NMC Registration: Just because you’re making a career change doesn’t mean you stop renewing your registration. Our courses require all nurse injectors to maintain your NMC registration.
2. Choose Your Prescribing Path: Unlike dermal fillers, Botox is a prescription-only injection. For those of you who are nurse prescribers, this won’t be an issue. You’ll already be able to prescribe Botox. If you’re not a nurse prescriber, you have two options.
The first is working under a prescriber. This can be a doctor, dentist, or prescribing nurse. How this works is your patients will have their first consultation with a prescriber. If the prescriber deems them suitable for Botox, they’ll prescribe it, and then you will do the injecting at their next appointment. This kind of arrangement requires a lot of trust between the injector and prescriber, something that can be difficult to build when you’re just starting out.
The second option is completing the V300 course to become a nurse prescriber. This is the option we recommend, especially if you’re looking to make aesthetics a long term career. It allows you to prescribe and inject without needing another practitioner, giving you more independence and career freedom. Most major universities will offer a V300 course, so there are plenty of options.
3. Find the Right Training Course: This is where the Aesthetic Training HUB comes in – more on this later!
4. Get Insured: Once you’ve completed your training and you’re ready to start injecting on patients, it’s time to get insurance. Choosing your insurance provider is not always an easy decision to make. There are many options out there. It’s best to research each provider and ask your mentors and peers which they use before deciding on one.
We briefly cover indemnity insurance in our online Botox course, and Dr MJ is available to answer any further questions you have regarding insurance during the in-person hands-on course.
5. Set Up with a Pharmacy: In order to purchase your Botox vials, you’ll need to get set up with a trustworthy pharmacist. Chances are most standard pharmacies in your city will not carry Botox. The best way to purchase the injectable is through reputable online pharmacies based in the UK. Just like your insurance provider, you’ll need to do research to find the best pharmacy option.
6. Continuous Learning: Just because you’ve completed your first course in Botox injections doesn’t mean your training stops there! The key to success as an aesthetic injector lies in continuous professional development. We’ve already mentioned that the aesthetics industry changes every year with new developments and technologies constantly coming on the scene.
Not only will advanced courses and mentoring sessions help keep you up to date with industry trends, it will also allow your skills to continue to grow. No one is a pro injector after just one course. It takes years of training and practice to become a truly stand-out injector. Be sure to keep learning and expanding your expertise every year.
Choosing the Right Botox Course: What to Look For
Possibly the most important part of this entire process is choosing the right Botox course. Your first course is what will set you up for success. When selecting this course, you should consider the following factors:
1. Comprehensive Curriculum
The first thing you’ll need to look for is a course that covers both theory and practice. Too many course providers only teach one or the other. A theory-only course may give you the knowledge needed to inject, but it won’t give you the necessary practical training. On the flip side, a practice-only course gives you this practical training but lacks the theoretical and foundational information needed to inject safely and effectively.
Here at the Aesthetic Training HUB, we offer:
- Extensive, rigorous online training modules that must be completed before any hands-on session.
- Small group hands-on training sessions where everyone is at the same learning level, meaning you won’t have to wait for one person to “catch-up” to everyone else.
- Inject on real patients with no model sharing.
- Comprehensive instruction in advanced needle techniques and manual dexterity, perfect for those just starting out with Botox injections.
2. Experienced Instructors
The quality of your instructors can make or break your learning experience. You wouldn’t want someone fresh out of their own first Botox course teaching you. It’s important to look for an instructor who is a leader in the field and has years of injecting and teaching experience.
Both our beginner and advanced courses are led by Dr MJ Rowland-Warmann, a practitioner with over a decade of experience and a qualified adult educator. Dr MJ is the number one instructor choice for those who prioritise safety. To learn more about the powerhouse that is Dr MJ, see our instructors page.
3. Accreditation
The next thing you’ll need to look at is if the course is CPD accredited. This ensures that the course’s content meets the standards and benchmarks of The CPD Certification Service. All of the HUB’s courses are CPD accredited, demonstrating our commitment to delivering high-quality education to all of our delegates.
4. Hands-On Training
Theory is an important and necessary part of your Botox training, but it means very little without practical experience. You’ll need to look for a course provider that provides exceptional hands-on training as well as theoretical training.
For example, the things that make the HUB’s hands-on Botox training stand out is:
- No model sharing – work end-to-end on not one, but two separate models.
- Small group sizes – courses at the HUB are capped at 6 delegates for personalised instruction
- Develop real-world skills – leave your hands-on course confident in consultation skills and treatment planning
5. Ongoing Support
One of the things that sets one course apart from another is whether they offer ongoing support and further training opportunities once you finish your beginner course. Always remember your learning doesn’t end when your course does.
Here at the HUB, our post-course offerings include:
- A world-renowned facial ultrasound course for those looking to dive deeper into what it means to ensure patient safety.
- One-to-one mentoring with Dr MJ that are personalised to whatever advanced techniques and injections you’d like to learn.
- Access to an exclusive WhatsApp group for continued support from Dr MJ and other HUB delegates.
- Regular content updates to keep you informed of industry advancements.
